Huayhuash is a compact, rugged range, and includes the second highest peak in Peru - Yerupaja Grande 6634m.
Every day on the trek hikers are treated to awesome close views of snowcapped peaks, glaciers and blue trout-filled lakes. There are no less than 8 passes to cross, the highest at 5000m. Our 15 day trek features a visit to the Base Camp of Siula Grande, made famous by Joe Simpson book and film, Touching The Void.
Previous climbing experience is not required, we will give full instruction and support. But the climbing days are physically demanding and you need to be strong. The climbs are optional. People not wishing to climb continue trekking on the normal path to camp with our crew.

Chiquian, at 3041m in the province of Bolognesi, is the capital of the Cordillera Huayhuash. The cost of living is higher here than in the Callejon de Huaylas, due to the problems of supplying the town, which is quite far from major roads. The town looks like a balcony suspended above the river Quero, All the perfectly aligned streets lead to Main Square from which one can see distant snowy summit.

The Huayhuash massif has some of the hardest climbs in the Peruvian Andes, not to mention the second highest summit in the Country, Yerupaya 6634m. The complete circuit of the Cordillera is an isolated trek, crossing several 4800m passes. Only experienced trekkers in good physical condition should attempt it. Take into account that the highest passes are often snow- covered at the beginning and end of the season. Both mountaineers and trekkers should be completely self-sufficient in food and medicines as it is very difficult obtain supplies in the few hamlets of this Cordillera.

It is a smaller, more rugged and more remote mountain range. With 7 peaks above 6,000m and many more above 5,500, it is one the most spectacular mountain trekking, hiking circuits in the world.

Cordillera huayhuash is the second highest mountain range in the worlds tropical region, only the cordillera Blanca immediately to the north is higher. Although a more one hundred kilometers from the Pacific Ocean, the crest of the range forms part of the continental divide, the waters from its eastern slopes flow into the Marañon River, a principal tributary of the Amazon.

In fact, Yerupaja is the highest point in the entire Amazon watershed. The Huayhuash is a relatively young mountain range in geologic terms, formed fifty to seventy million years ago during the Mesozoic era. Its dramatic relief was caused both by the uplift of ancient seabeds and by erosion caused by water and the carving action of the glaciers. The range consists primarily of sedimentary rocks such as quartzite, limestone and slate, though the bases of the mountains are formed mainly of Granodiorite.

Acclimatization in Huaraz: 2 or 3 days, one day tour around Huaraz, Cordillera Blanca - Negra to acclimatize this provides the opportunity to adapt well to the altitude - insuring a good physical condition before setting off towards Cordillera Blanca and Huayhuash Trekking and Climbing in Peru.
